Nice drill, posted by Matt Kuzdub. By itself and with some variations, this is also a good exercise to improve decision making and executive functions. By the way we can use it as „Trick the mind“-Drills to improve mental strength.

Variations:
1. set target on both sides;
2. use targets in different colours (f.e. one red and one white):
a) player announces the target before hitting the ball („red“ or „white“);
b) coach announces the target (colour);
c) player or coach uses animal names for the targets (red=“tiger“; white=“cheetah“)
d) coach or player announces target (colour) and speed or spin (f.e. „red-topspin“ or „red-save“, ….)
e) player or coach announces target (animal) and uses another animal name for spin or ball height (f.e. „snake=flat“, „giraffe= high over the net“), then f.e. „tiger-snake“ or „tiger-giraffe“,….

 

Matt Kuzdub on dynamical systems theory and coaching tennis

Some things are wonderful 🙂 . One of them is to find somebody, who shares my convictions. Matt Kuzdub, tennis coach, and a facebook friend, has written a wonderful statement about non-linear pedagogy and the dynamical systems theory and what it means for learning and coaching in tennis. I am working with kids and players, who  come for one or two hours in the week to play tennis under the guidance of a professional coach. Matt is working with very ambitioned players and goes with them significantly more intense. But he shares my perception: there is a better way to learn and to coach. And it is evidence based!

Tennis Players & Coaches – Apply Sport Science Basics to Tennis Specific Training. How do different athletic qualities fit into the program of a tennis player? This is a complex question but one that deserves an answer. With information being so readily accessible, there are countless videos of players doing all kinds of things off the tennis court. But just because a top 100 or 50 player is doing X or Y, does it mean it’s effective? Is it driven by some underlying scientific basis? Often times, it’s not. It’s a regurgitation of someone else’s training or a drill that was once seen before. If you’re a player, and someone is telling you to do squats on a stability ball…or ladder drills to develop footwork and speed…seek alternatives as these are merely gimmicks that have little transfer to elevated sporting performance.
