Inside the box

Under time and emotional pressure the human brain prevents to resort to supposedly proven solution strategies. Especially in our communication strategies,  it happens for example in a violent emotional confrontation, that we rely on learned behavior patterns and recourse to familiar patterns of action. This could be described as „inside-the-box“ strategies. These are patterns of behavior that are familiar to us from our childhood or from our experience that we can supposedly „rely“ on, but these patterns often do not match the current problems.

Tennis Coaches who spend a lot of time to play the balls during practice in the direction of their client know about this problem. Playing matches in tournament, they fall back.
Actually there are few sportsmen who spend more hours on the court and „practice“ more than the coach himself! But in the competitive situation – under stress – they very often use the known behavior pattern: they play the ball in the middle, play the the net-advancing opponent the ball „handsome“ at shoulder height, play their own attacking ball slowly and reachable into the field, …..
