Play the ball over the net

The mostly asked opening questions to my clients in my tennis training are: „What do you want to improve or change in your game?“, „When would you describe your racketswing as satisfying for you?“Frequently there comes the following answer: „I want to play the ball as hard as possible and low as possible over the net.“ This is one of the most common beginner illusion, which has the consequence, that the ball is often played into the net. The illusion is, that beginners do not realize that playing low over the net leads to a ball, that usually ends up in the middle area of the court and therefore is replayed easier by the partner as a ball, played to the baseline. To make this clear to the beginner, the following exercises from  INNER COACHING (TMS) are useful:
Spacer„: play rallies with your partner and name, after your ball has crossed the net, the distance to the net in centimeters. Alternatively, players who are not familiar with this exercise, designate the distance in three stages. 1 = just over the net, 2 = about one meter above the net, 3 = more than one meter above the net (for Kids: Spacer 2)).

Targets„: play rallies with your partner and play to a target, which is about one meter away from the base line of your opponent. Play your balls as close as possible to the target.

From the tasks the player gets an altered perception and  „focus on the essentials“ which is in this case to play the ball over the net and with enough length into the field.
